For the Theory and Methodology of the Teaching of English in the Secondary Level class we were to do a demonstrative class, in this class we were to plan and create the instructional material we were to give to our students all while following the D.E.P.R. unit
guidelines and apply what we previously learned in class. This was the first time I did a demonstrative class; in the past I have only made lesson plans, or a presentation based of a topic but not both. I decided to base my class on the Unit 6.5 which is based on poetry aimed for sixth graders. I found that sixth grade was a very interesting grade to teach since is on the very edge of a child journey into middle school. Poetry is one of my favorite topics to learn therefore I wanted to challenge myself into seeing if I was able to teach it. I decided to brainstorm topics I could teach my students taking in consideration what previous knowledge they might have and the grade level I was teaching. I ended up choosing to teach my students Literary Devices since this are crucial for understanding and creating poetry. First thing I did was create a presentation with all the information I was going to teach my students. I tried to keep the presentation short and full of the essentials definitions and examples needed to comprehend each literary device. After that I chose and activity that I could engage my students with the literary devices. For the activity I had my students divided into group of twos, then provided my students a copy of a song lyrics which I had divided into two parts so my students could work on the same song but different parts of it and a handout based on the literary devices. In the handout the students will look for the definition of each literary device shown in the presentation, this will encourage the students to pay attention to the presentation and it can later be use as a study tool, then look for literary devices used in the song lyrics. This will show students how poetry goes beyond academic and is something used on their daily life. After all our aim as teachers is to show our students how they can use what they learned beyond the four walls of the classroom.
